Painting Process

I start each piece with some light spontaneous background washes and line drawing with acrylic ink, alcohol, acrylic, and graphite.  I let what happens at this stage guide the rest of the composition so it is pretty intuitive.  The work is then coated with many layers of an various acrylic mediums that are archival, UV resistant, and non-yellowing.  This is produces a thick layer to make the piece appear wax-like.  On top of this, I add more acrylic and ink washes and also more detailed imagery.  For this last step, I use a variety of acrylic mediums on top to let some imagery appear glossy while others are more matt so the surface becomes varied and textural.
